THE POSITION

We are seeking a FinOps Engineer to join our team and play a key role in managing our cloud costs effectively. In this position, you will work closely with Sr. FinOps engineers, various engineering teams and key stakeholders to optimize cloud spending, monitor usage patterns, implement cost-saving strategies, and contribute to maintaining financial accountability within our AWS and DataDog environments.

The FinOps Engineer role goes beyond mere cost analysis; it involves applying an understanding of both finance and cloud technologies to drive efficient cloud spending and usage. This role will involve using data-driven insights to guide decisions and improve cloud financial operations.

THE GAME PLAN
Everyone on our team has a part to play

  • Monitor and analyze AWS usage and cost trends utilizing cloud cost management tools (ie: AWS Cost Explorer, DataDog, etc.) to identify opportunities for optimization.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to implement best practices for cost-effective cloud resource utilization, such as right-sizing instances, leveraging savings plans, reserved instances, spot instances and optimizing storage.
  • Develop and maintain dashboards and reports to track AWS and DataDog spending and provide insights to stakeholders.
  • Participate in the development of strategies to optimize cloud spending while maintaining performance and scalability.
  • Provide detailed financial reporting and insights to stakeholders, helping them understand cloud costs and make informed decisions.
  • Assist in cost governance processes, including contribution to the development of budgets, defining cost policies, and enforcing compliance.
  • Develop and maintain PowerPoint presentations for stakeholders.
  • Create Purchase Orders, obtain contract approvals and track associated activities.
  • Stay informed about AWS and DataDog services, pricing models, discounts, and new cost management features to maximize cost efficiency.

THE STATS
What we’re looking for in our next teammate

  • Proficiency with AWS Cost Management and other third-party tools for managing costs and optimizing resources.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS services and infrastructure.
  • Experience with observability tools (ie: DataDog, etc.) as well as Infrastructure as Code methodologies.
  • Strong analytical skills and experience with financial analysis, reporting, and forecasting.
  • Detail-oriented mindset with the ability to work independently and prioritize tasks effectively within a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively across technical and non-technical teams.
  • A proactive approach to identifying and implementing cost-saving measures.
  • A commitment to continuous learning and staying current with cloud technology and financial management trends.
  • Relevant certifications in AWS, FinOps, or cloud financial management are a plus.
  • Experience with scripting and query languages (e.g., Python, SQL) is a plus.
