About the role
We are seeking a highly motivated Data Graphics Analyst to join The Athletic's Editorial Graphics Team. The ideal candidate will possess a passion for sports data and visual journalism, strong communication skills, the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, and meticulous attention to detail.
The Data Graphics Analyst will be responsible for finding, analyzing, cleaning, and editing datasets for visualizations and collaborating with the Graphics Team’s designers and developers to determine the best ways to display data visually within stories. Additionally, this individual should have experience building and maintaining prediction models, forecasts, and advanced statistics, ideally for sports or a similar field.
This role will report to the Managing Editor of Graphics and is a fully remote position for candidates permanently residing in the United States or Canada.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze, clean, and edit datasets to prepare them for visualizations.
  • Collaborate with designers and developers to determine the best methods for analyzing and displaying data in stories.
  • Edit datasets in and outside of code for their statistical accuracy and proper usage.
  • Build and maintain models for sports predictions, forecasts, and advanced statistics.
  • Ensure accuracy and clarity in all visualizations and data representations.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest trends and techniques in data visualization and sports analytics.
  • Communicate complex data findings in a clear and concise manner to a broad audience.
  • Contribute to a collaborative and dynamic team environment.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in data analysis tools such as Python, R, or similar.
  • Strong understanding of statistical modeling and predictive analytics.
  • Familiarity with database management and SQL.
  • Experience with data cleaning and transformation processes.
  • Advanced Excel/Google Sheets skills.
  • Familiarity with version control systems like Git.
  • Ability to gather data from APIs and web scraping tools.
  • Knowledge of or background in journalism and understanding of editorial standards and visual storytelling.
  • Experience with data visualization tools and libraries (e.g., D3.js, Datawrapper, Flourish) is a plus.
  • Knowledge of web technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) is a plus.
  • Knowledge of GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, Mapbox) and geospatial data analysis techniques is a plus.
  • Experience working within design tools like Figma and Adobe is a plus.
  • Knowledge of and interest in using AI tools to collect and analyze data + automate workflows is a plus.
The annual base salary range for this role is $95,000.00 - $110,000.00 USD. The total compensation offered for this position may vary based on factors such as education, experience, skills, and location. It may also include non-cash rewards and benefits. The base salary range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
