Overview

This exciting new role is the first of its kind at Tonal Systems and will ultimately be responsible for building a tax function within the organization.

The Tax Manager will be responsible for ensuring all monthly, quarterly, annual, and other local, state, and federal taxes are filed in timely. This person will serve as Tonal System’s tax leader and will liaison with external tax consultants and local tax jurisdictions for various topics such as sales & use, franchise, excise, property, income, payroll, and other miscellaneous taxes.

This role will be an individual contributor to start; however, they will be tasked with building sustainable processes for paying, remitting, and reporting tax. Including leading initiatives to establish and maintain internal controls and collaborate with operating groups to implement and improve the effectiveness of business processes. This person should enjoy solving dynamic challenges in a fast-paced environment.

This position is ideal for a high-energy and detailed-oriented tax professional, who can train and collaborate cross functionally.

This position can be based in Remote (US) and will report to the Director - Assistant Controller. This person will need to work collaboratively with all members of the Finance team, which may occasionally include the CFO and CEO. This can be a highly visible role in the organization, which may have opportunities to present to the Audit Committee of the Board of Directors.

What You Will Do

  • Oversee processes for collection and remittance of sales tax, including leading the filing of monthly, quarterly and annual sales and use tax returns within Avalara

  • Responsible for managing Avalara and other miscellaneous tax filing schedules including master data maintenance necessary for internal and external reporting

  • Work with an outsourced transactional accounting team on daily operations to lead tax-related month-end close, and reporting and adherence to policies and procedures

  • Coordinate with Tax Advisors on annual State and Federal income tax returns within the United States and in Canada

  • Responsible for annual tax provision on the US GAAP financial statements

  • Review monthly close activities to ensure financial results are being maintained to accurately and completely reflect Book-to-Tax Differences

  • Manage tax-related information requests, both internally and externally

  • Actively participate in strategic business decisions by bringing a tax point of view for new business initiatives and expansion

Who You Are (Required)

  • Bachelor’s degree in tax, accounting or finance

  • 5-7 years of experience working in tax, indirect and/or income tax, preferably with recent public accounting experience

  • Work history in either manufacturing, retail, or SAS-based companies with revenues greater than $100M

  • Experience with NetSuite and Avalara, or other similar tax filing software

  • Able to balance hands-on work (when necessary) with the effective delegation of tasks

  • Collaborative and transparent communication style

Who You Are (Preferred)

  • 3-5 years of public accounting experience - open to individuals directly out of public accounting

  • Experience working with start-up organizations

  • History of interaction with local taxing authorities
